History

Over 2,000 Years of Legacy

From Mauryan emperors to British administrators — every great power of the Deccan coveted Nellore. Each left behind temples, forts, and stories.

3rd Century BCE
Maurya & Satavahana Era
Nellore's recorded history begins under the Maurya Empire. The Satavahanas, Pallavas, and Eastern Gangas subsequently built the early temple traditions and trade routes still visible today.
7th – 13th Century
Cholas, Kakatiyas & Telugu Cholas
The mighty Chola empire introduced Dravidian architecture — culminating in the 12th-century Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. The Kakatiyas expanded Nellore's cultural identity and spiritual landscape.
14th – 16th Century
Vijayanagara Empire
Emperor Krishnadevaraya built the hilltop Udayagiri Fort and operated Krishnapatnam Port — making Nellore one of medieval India's most important maritime trade centres.
18th Century
Arcot Nawabs & British Raj
After the Arcot Nawabs, the British recognised Nellore's agricultural and port value, incorporating it into the Madras Presidency as a key colonial administrative hub.
1952 — 1956
Birth of Andhra Pradesh
Potti Sriramulu — a son of Nellore — fasted unto death for a separate Telugu state. His supreme sacrifice directly created the state of Andhra in 1953, later Andhra Pradesh. The district bears his name.
